Peter has 40 years of experience as a marine and estuarine scientist. He has worked as an environmental scientist for the NSW government for 35 years. He has overseen the development of a science based estuary management structure for NSW estuaries, and has assisted with the integration of this science into government policy through the development of water quality objectives and implementation of the “Risk-based Framework for managing water quality”. His research fields include estuarine ecology, pollution impacts, factors affecting seagrass survival, phytoplankton ecology, microbial ecology, climate change impacts, impacts of diffuse source pollution on the ecology of coastal streams, and impacts of feral horses on alpine stream condition.
Dr Scanes is also Australia’s foremost authority on managing the environmental impacts of oil spills and regularly presents on this area at National fora. He was the Environment and Science Co-ordinator under the NSW Oil Spill Response arrangements and has completed PUAOPE025A - Manage Planning for a Complex incident, as well AIIMS Awareness Training (22459VIC), IMT Awareness.
